Column Splice
Column splice details included in DesconWin are:
1. Flange Splice Plated,
2. Flange and Web Splice Plated,
3. Butt Plated, and
4. Directly Welded.
Flange and Web plates may be bolted or welded to both columns, or bolted to one and welded to the other. The
flange connections are designed for axial tension, flange compressive force in excess of end bearing capacity, and
tensile or excess compressive force generated by combined moment and axial force. The web connection is designed
for the strong axis shear at the splice, and in case of the “Directly Welded” splice, for combined shear and vertical
force. The “Butt Plated” splice is welded only at the flanges. Welding options are fillet, PJP, and CJP welds for the
butt plates, PJP and CJP welds for directly welded columns. Fillers are included in the design if they are needed.
